DETAILS:
Chapel Choir - The Chapel Choir is the resident choir for Sunday services in Duke Chapel, a truly stunning place to sing and worship. The choir’s repertoire spans almost 500 years of sacred music from renaissance motets to works newly-composed for the choir. Our Messiah concerts sell out all three performances, with great orchestra and soloists, and are incredibly thrilling experiences for us all. For the spring concert this year, the Chapel Choir will combine with the Chorale and to perform Handel’s Israel in Egypt. In the past the Chapel Choir has gone on tours to China, England, Austria, Spain, and around the US and has produced a number of recordings.
Students of all faiths comprise the Chapel Choir, a choir which not only excels musically but is the basis of a strong social community. Each new singer is given a buddy, who sings beside you and is available for any kind of help you need as you settle into the choir. Many singers have formed themselves into “families,” small groups that have occasional dinners together or do off-campus activities.
The Chapel Choir also has a 32-voice Schola Cantorum which rehearses early on a few Sunday mornings (usually at 8:45 am) and requires outside preparation. The 18-voice Choral Vespers Ensemble, conducted by Assistant Conductor Allan Friedman, leads a candlelight Vespers service each Thursday at 5:15 pm. More information about these groups can be obtained at the auditions.
Chorale - The Chorale’s repertoire is always diverse and exciting, from 16th-century anthems and madrigals to pieces written by Chorale singers, from spirituals to folksongs, and everything in between. In the spring, the Chorale will combine with the Chapel Choir and Durham Choral Society to perform Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem.
One of the highlights of Chorale every year is a tour during Spring Break. This year we'll be going to Florida and touring up the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina.
The Chorale also has a 24-voice Chamber Choir which rehearses 9:15-10:15 pm Tuesdays and sings more intimate music from many styles.
