Announcement:
Duke University seeks to appoint a Dean of Duke Chapel, a person of theological depth and pastoral skill, an eloquent preacher and gifted administrator, who will provide spiritual leadership for the university’s Christian community and its diverse constituencies. The successful candidate will be an ordained Protestant minister with either a record or clear promise of outstanding achievement. A Ph.D. or Th.D. is desirable.
Duke’s founder, James Buchanan Duke personally chose the land on which a “great church” would be built at the heart of the new university. Over succeeding generations, Duke Chapel has continued as a vital center of worship (with approximately 1000 in attendance for Sunday service), sacred music, great preaching, and collaboration with over two dozen Religious Life groups representing a wide variety of traditions. Located on the university’s West Campus, the grand neo-gothic structure reflects the university’s motto: Eruditio et Religio, knowledge and religious faith.
Thus the new Dean of Duke Chapel inherits a rich and demanding tradition. It is expected that he or she will be:
- a person of theological depth capable of teaching and ministering across a broad range of university constituencies, but whose contributions and influence are not limited to service on the Duke campus;
- a person of humility and integrity who by word and deed models the life of faith within the university community;
- a superb preacher whose understanding of Scripture finds expression in the proclamation of the gospel;
- a gifted liturgist who is sensitive to the context and traditions of Duke Chapel;
- a spiritual leader who brings pastoral instincts and skills to the tasks of ministry;
- a minister who cares for students and is able to engage undergraduate, graduate, and professional students;
- a person of a generous and ecumenical spirit who welcomes, respects, and cooperates with other religious traditions;
- a public presence in the university and beyond who fosters dialogue among a variety of perspectives and academic disciplines, who is comfortable at the many intersections of Eruditio et Religio;
- a person of compassion and vision who promotes a creative and salutary role for the Chapel in its relationship with the City of Durham;
- a teacher both in the Chapel and the classroom, who fully understands the educational dimension of ministry on a university campus;
- a talented administrator who is able to empower a large staff and lead a complex organization;
- a wise steward of human and financial resources, willing and able to develop additional sources of financial support for the Chapel’s ministry and its future.
