Why Become a Friend?

There are several benefits to becoming a Friend of Duke Chapel. First, your gift helps Duke Chapel serve four major constituencies:

  • It serves the university by hosting major events in the life of the community and its members and by attending to the University’s motto – eruditio et religio – by keeping the heart of the university listening to the heart of God.

  • It serves students by convening, overseeing and contributing to a dynamic and diverse culture of religious life on campus, and seeking to model respectful and enriching engagement in the context of profound difference.

  • It serves the American church by offering vibrant interdenominational worship characterized by a strong tradition of choral and organ music, preaching, and liturgy and by seeking to model a form of mission and engagement that is faithful and appropriate to a rapidly changing university and social culture.

  • It serves the wider community of the Triangle, the state and beyond by being present in and contributing to issues and questions of the common good in appropriate and imaginative ways and by attending to the needs and interests visitors drawn by hospital stays or tourism.
Philanthropy built Duke Chapel. Every stone, every fragment of stained glass, every inch of gracefully carved wood bears the mark of a generous benefactor and stands as a testament to people of faith and vision. Today, we have an opportunity to continue building Duke Chapel, not just with stone and glass, but with daily actions and visions for the future. The Friends of Duke Chapel support the Chapel in nearly all aspects of its ongoing mission to keep the heart of the University listening to the heart of God.

Friends of Duke Chapel also receive:

  • The Chapel’s full color, 12-month Academic Year Calendar of Events mailed to your preferred address

  • A quarterly newsletter mailed to your preferred address

  • Invitation to a luncheon preceding the Saturday performance Handel’s Messiah by the Duke Chapel Choir, with Messiah tickets, reserved seating, and reserved parking included in the price

  • Invitation to a fun annual meeting each spring

For Duke Alumni, unrestricted annual gifts to the Chapel are counted in the Duke Annual Fund and are included in alumni class gift totals. Duke gift club members receive special recognition in University publications and are invited to events on campus throughout the year.
