“Stewardship is a relationship with God that both receives and gives, making all things possible.”

The Chapel fulfills James B. Duke’s desire that the building exert a profound influence on the lives of the young women and men who attend the University. The Friends of Duke Chapel share in Mr. Duke’s vision. The contributions made by the Friends of Duke Chapel are a mainstay in meeting the diverse and challenging needs of the Chapel ministry. Seven days a week, from dawn until late at night, Duke Chapel is the site of great activity. As you peruse this site you will get a taste of the depth and breadth of Chapel life.

Duke Chapel is a nationally recognized pulpit, an acclaimed center of sacred music, and a place of learning and interfaith cooperation. In times of jubilation, reconciliation, trials, and trouble, Duke Chapel remains a source of comfort and challenge. Its ever-widening ministry provides these opportunities:

  • worship through prayer, word, and music
  • service within the University, community, and beyond
  • celebration through concerts, special services, and festivals
  • learning in seminars, study groups, and retreats
The faith, comfort, hope, and inspiration offered by the day-to-day ministry of Duke Chapel is shared with a large and diverse community:
  • students, faculty, staff, and people from the local community
  • tourists and travelers
  • patients, their families, and caregivers
  • people who worship via broadcasts of services and concerts on radio and the Web
Philanthropy built Duke Chapel. Every stone, every fragment of stained glass, every inch of gracefully carved wood bears the mark of a generous benefactor and stands as a testament to people of faith and vision. Today, we have an opportunity to continue building Duke Chapel, not just with stone and glass, but with daily actions and visions for the future.
