Sunday, February 24, 2008 is “Student Preacher Sunday” at Duke Chapel. A Duke undergradu-ate student will be selected to preach in the Duke Chapel 11:00 a.m. Sunday worship service. All Duke undergraduates are welcome to apply. You can watch past Student Preacher Sunday services at the following links:

The application process is as follows:

1) You must submit a draft of your proposal sermon via email to Becky Smith (rsm443@duke.edu) by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 18. Your sermon should be based upon one or more of the lectionary scripture texts for that Sunday and should be on a topic that you deem appropriate to the worship context.

The Lectionary texts for Sunday, February 24, 2008 are:

Exodus 17:1-7
Psalm 95
Romans 5:1-11
John 4:5-42

Your sermon draft should be typed, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, a maximum of 2,500 words and approximately 15 to 20 minutes in length.

2) Finalists will be interviewed and deliver a trial sermon before members of the Duke Chapel Student Preacher Selection Committee. Interviews will take place on Tuesday, January 29.

3) Basic criteria for selection include the relevance of the sermon to the scripture passage(s), the quality of the sermon draft, sermon delivery, and the appropriateness of the subject matter for a Chapel service. A final decision will be made after all interviews have been conducted. The winner will be announced by Friday, February 1.

4) Please submit a photograph.
