Duke University Chapel presents special
worship services to commemorate important dates in the liturgical
year. For more information on any service or to participate
in worship, please contact Worship Director Meghan
Feldmeyer.

Christmas
Eve
The following three services are held in Duke Chapel on December 24:
- Service for Children, 3:00 p.m.
- Service of Carols and Holy Communion, 5:30 p.m.
- Traditional service of Lessons and Carols, 11:00 p.m.
Attendance at services in the Chapel is limited to 1,375 people.
The Chapel fills for these Christmas Eve services, so please
plan to arrive early. All singers are welcome to sing with
the Christmas Eve Community Choir, conducted by Rodney Wynkoop,
at the 11:00 p.m. Service
of Lessons and Carols. For more information, call 919-684-3898.
Blessing of Animals
The Blessing of Animals is an outdoor worship service
held each year on the Sunday in October closest to the Feast
Day
of St. Francis (October 3). This service
features a homily, animal-focused liturgy, and a performance
by the Durham Children’s Choir. If you are interested
in attending the service, you need only arrive at Duke Chapel
with your pet. All pets are welcome,
but please consider the wisdom of bringing aggressive animals.
Large animals also are welcome, but must be led (for example,
horses must not be ridden). Clean-up aids and water will be
available.
Past homilies at animal blessing services:
All Hallows Eve
All Hallows Eve, October 31, ushers in the feast of All Hallows,
also known as All Saints. All Hallows, celebrated on November
1, has long been the feast day in the Western church for remembering
and celebrating the communion of the saints those of every
generation. Each
year, Duke Chapel celebrates All Hallows Eve with an evening
candlelight worship service at 10:30 p.m. on October 31.
All are invited, and Halloween costumes are welcome.
Ash Wednesday and Holy Week Services
Each year on Ash Wednesday, Duke Chapel holds a service with
imposition of ashes at 8:00 am and 5:15 pm. Holy
Week begins in Duke Chapel with a Palm/Passion Sunday service
that moves from a blessing of the palms on the steps of the
Chapel, a procession by all into the Chapel
and then a service that includes a reading of the story
of Jesus' arrest, trial and crucifixion. After Palm Sunday,
and each day during Holy Week, all are invited to attend
short worship services at 12:00 noon each day.
Maundy Thursday is marked with a evening service that including
the draping of the cross and holy communion. Good
Friday is celebrated with a procession across campus at 11:00
am and an evening service of Tenebrae, or darkness.
There is the Vigil on Holy Saturday, followed by the Sunrise
Service in Duke Gardens
and two Easter
services in the Chapel
with choir and orchestra.
