The Revd Canon Dr. Samuel Wells was installed as Dean of Duke University Chapel in a special worship service at 11:00 am on September 25, 2005. A large celebratory lunch on the grounds was held for all who attended following the service.

"The Chapel and the Dean are here to serve this University. And the way to serve this university is to keep the heart of the university listening to the heart of God," said Wells.

Duke President Richard Brodhead installed the Dean. The service included the giving of the symbols of ministry to the Dean from Divinity School professor Stanley Hauerwas, Assistant Dean Craig Kocher, and others. Dean Wells also washed the feet of twelve people, including Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans, granddaughter of Washington Duke, Durham city mayor Bill Bell, and Duke Divinity school professor Willie Jennings.

"This gesture is saying that this Chapel and this Dean are here to obey the command of Jesus, in washing people and bringing them to new life, in breaking bread and sharing the companionship of God, and in humble, sometimes humiliating acts of loving service," said Wells of the footwashing.

The Chapel choir, whose ranks included over 170 alumni in town for a Reunion Weekend to create a combined choir of over 300 singers, performed several well-known pieces, including the Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Faur.
