Chapel Hours
During the academic year: 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Summer hours: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Holidays and Breaks: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Closed Christmas Day (except when Christmas lands on a Sunday)

Please note: Saturday and Sunday afternoon visits are NOT recommended without calling to see if weddings are scheduled for that day. If a wedding is taking place, visitors will not be permitted inside. Call the general information line to see if the Chapel will be open to visitors before visiting on a weekend.

Closed to the public for weddings, funerals, and other special events that are not listed on the Chapel web calendar.

Driving Directions to Duke Chapel
Duke Chapel's physical address is 401 Chapel Drive, Durham, NC 27708.

  • From Chapel Hill on NC 15-501
    Where 15-501 Bypass and 15-501 Business split, take the Bypass (exit right). From 15-501 Bypass, exit at NC 751 (Duke University West Campus) and turn right onto 751 (Cameron Boulevard). Go a little over half a mile, and turn left onto Science Drive. After the first traffic light (at Towerview Drive), take the second right into the Bryan Center parking lot. Parking is in the Bryan Center parking deck immediately on the right.

  • From Raleigh on I-40 West
    From I-40, take the exit for Durham Freeway (NC 147 North). Take the Fulton Street/Hillandale Road exit and turn left onto Fulton Street. Continue on Fulton Street until it ends at Erwin Road. Turn right onto Erwin Road. At the third traffic light, turn left onto Towerview Road. At the first traffic light (second intersection), turn left onto Science Drive. Take the second right into the Bryan Center parking lot. Parking is in the Bryan Center parking deck immediately on the right.

  • From Greensboro on I-40 West and I-85 North
    Take I-40/I-85 until I-40 and I-85 split; continue on I-85 North. Exit at Hillandale Road, and turn right. Hillandale Road turns into Fulton Street; continue on Fulton Street until it ends at Erwin Road (a little less than two miles from the I-85 exit). Turn right onto Erwin Road. At the third traffic light, turn left onto Towerview Road. At the first traffic light (second intersection), turn left onto Science Drive. Take the second right into the Bryan Center parking lot. Parking is in the Bryan Center parking deck immediately on the right.

  • From the North on I-85
    From I-85 South, exit at Hillandale Road, and turn left. Go approximately one mile, until Hillandale Road turns into Fulton Street. Continue on Fulton Street until it ends at Erwin Road. Turn right onto Erwin Road. At the third traffic light, turn left onto Towerview Road. At the first traffic light (second intersection), turn left onto Science Drive. Take the second right into the Bryan Center parking lot. Parking is in the Bryan Center parking deck immediately on the right.

Parking
Visitors to the Chapel are encouraged to use the Bryan Center parking deck (Parking Garage IV) or the Bryan Center visitors lot. The cost is $2 per hour except on Sunday mornings, when parking is free until 1:00 p.m. For some evening and weekend special events, overflow parking will be provided in the Biological Sciences parking lot, on the opposite side of Science Drive from the Bryan Center and Chapel, for $2 per hour.

During evenings and weekends, some additional free parking is available on West Campus. Limited parking is available on the streets and in selected parking lots that do not remain gated evenings and weekends. Tours
Guided tours of the Chapel are available to school groups, senior citizens’ groups, church groups, and families. The tours focus on the interior of the Chapel, and usually run for 30 to 45 minutes. In order to ensure a docent is available to lead a tour, please make a reservation by emailing: chapeltours@duke.edu. Many groups take advantage of the campus-wide tours offered through the Admissions Office (details here). These tours include the Chapel and other points of interest on campus.

Carillon Music
The University Carillonneur performs a 15-minute recital on the 50-bell carillon Monday through Friday from 5:00 to 5:15 p.m. and before and after the Sunday worship services (at 10:45 a.m. and 12:00 noon). The carillon is located near the top of the Chapel tower and can best be enjoyed outside in the vicinity of the Chapel.

Organ Music
For the enjoyment of visitors to the Chapel, the Benjamin N. Duke Memorial Flentrop organ is played most weekdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. At other times during the day, one might hear an organist practicing for a special event or service.

Tower Access
Access to the top of the Chapel tower is closed to the public. The small elevator was designed as a service elevator rather than for tourists.
