The Blessing of Animals is an outdoor worship service held each
year on the Sunday in October closest to the Feast Day of St.
Francis (October 3). All people who love animals, along with all
pets and their human friends, are invited to this service, which
focuses on God’s gifts of animals, the natural world, and
our responsibilities as stewards of God’s creation.
How To Participate
If you are interested in attending the service, you need only
arrive at Duke Chapel with your pet. All pets are welcome, but
please consider the wisdom of bringing aggressive animals. Large
animals also are welcome, but must be led (for example, horses
must not be ridden). Clean-up aids and water will be available.
The Planning Committee for the Blessing of Animals is always
looking for people interested in participating in this service
as ministers, musicians, guest speakers, lectors and other performers
(such as dancers). Ministers are chosen on the basis of their
understanding of the theology and appreciation for the service,
and who are available on the given Sunday to participate. We welcome
leaders from all faith traditions to join us. In addition, we
enthusiastically welcome youth participants to help in all aspects
of the service. If you are interested in participating, please
contact . Please be sure to
get your requests in early to ensure consideration.
If you are part of an animal stewardship group and are interested
in having an information table at the service, please contact
.
