The Christian year comes to a somber, grand, and glorious summit
during Holy Week, the most holy week of the Christian year. Holy
Week begins in Duke Chapel with a Palm/Passion Sunday service
that moves from a blessing of the palms on the steps of the Chapel,
a grand and raucous procession by all into the Chapel and then
a service that moves into the longest gospel reading of the year
-- the story of Jesus' arrest, trial and crucifixion.
Worship is held every day during the next week at noon in the Chapel. These
services last less than forty-five minutes and can be a part of your luncheon
break. Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, two of the Chapel's most distinctive
and well received services take place in the evening. It is an unforgettable
experience to sit in the Chapel in total darkness on Good Friday as the Chapel
bells are tolled.
There is the Vigil on Holy Saturday, followed by the Sunrise
Service in Duke Gardens and two Easter services in the Chapel with choir
and orchestra. Make plans now to participate in all of these services during Holy Week. You will
be blessed by walking the Lenten journey with Jesus. The Chapel has banners
with the Stations of the Cross that can be part of your personal prayer
and meditation during the forty days of Lent.
