Choral Vespers is celebrated in Duke Chapel at 5:15 p.m.
each Thursday during the academic year. This thirty-minute
candlelight service
of worship consists of scripture readings, prayers, and
sacred music and is held in the intimate setting of
the Chancel. The Duke Vespers
Ensemble, a select group of singers who specialize in
Renaissance and 20th-century motets, leads the musical
portion of the service,
directed by Allan Friedman, Assistant Conductor and Administrative
Coordinator of Chapel Music. The Dean or guest
participants preside
at each service, assisted by Worship Coordinator Meghan
Feldmeyer. Lectors are chosen from the university community
and include Divinity School students, professors, university
employees, and ministers.
Beginning with an a cappella hymn, sung in procession by the
choir, the Vespers service is based on the liturgy of Choral Evensong
celebrated by the Anglican and Episcopal denominations. The congregation
joins in the responsorial chanting of a psalm and in the singing
of hymns accompanied by Dr. David Arcus, Chapel Organist. Two
anthems are sung by the choir at each service and are chosen to
complement the scripture readings assigned for that week in the
common lectionary. Each service closes with a setting of the Nunc
dimittis by Orlando Gibbons.
